Advent Day 9: Mighty God (Philippians 2:9-11)

Devotion by Sterling Woodard

For this reason God highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow—in heaven and on earth and under the earth—and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:9-11)

In the quiet anticipation of Advent, we turn our hearts to Philippians 2:9-11, where Paul paints a majestic portrait of Christ’s exaltation. In these verses, we do not merely see Jesus as a humble, vulnerable babe in a manger, but as the Mighty God foretold in Isaiah 9:6—eternal, sovereign, and unassailable in power.

As Mighty God, Jesus embodies divine strength that conquers sin, death, and darkness. His birth shattered the silence of four centuries, heralding a Kingdom where weakness is transformed into victory. In the incarnation, the Almighty veiled His glory in human flesh, demonstrating that true might resides in sacrificial love

This Advent, amid twinkling lights and festive preparations, let us ponder the paradox: the babe of Bethlehem in swaddling clothes is the same Lord who commands the cosmos. His name evokes awe, demanding our surrender and worship whether now or later.

This Mighty God invites us into intimacy, offering refuge in our own frailty and weakness. As we eagerly await His return, may we live under His lordship, and find strength in His exalted name!

Reflect:

– How does acknowledging Jesus as Mighty God change the way you approach Him and your daily challenges?

– Where in your life do you need to bow your knee to His lordship this Advent season and rest in him being fully Mighty God?

Pray:

Heavenly Father, Mighty God, thank you for Jesus. Thank you for seeing my brokenness and desperate need for your Son. Thank you for making Him above all things so that I may lay all things before Him. Help me appreciate and ponder His splendor this season and surrender my life daily to His glory. Amen. dwelling among us. Help me to trust Your power and rest in Your love today. Be my strength in weakness and my peace in chaos. In Your name, Amen.
