Today’s Weekly Word marks our last week in The Parables of Jesus series! As we continue our sermon series, One More, our weekly readings, devotionals, and reflection questions will continue to help us reflect and prepare our hearts for how God is calling and equipping each of us to reach the one more!

The Parable of the Marriage Feast paints a stunning picture of the gospel, but it also carries a profound warning that may pierce the human heart. Jesus reveals a King who has prepared a lavish, costly feast for His Son and graciously opens the doors to everyone—the broken, the weary, the morally bankrupt, and the forgotten. God’s invitation is boundless, and no one is too far gone to take a seat at His table.
However, as the king in the story walks among his guests, he notices a man not wearing a wedding garment. In the ancient world, a host king provided these robes so that every guest, regardless of their background, stood equal before him. To refuse the robe was a bold statement of self-sufficiency—an attempt to enjoy the king’s table while rejecting the king’s authority and provision.
This moment in the parable exposes a crucial spiritual truth: we cannot come to God on our own terms or in our own self-made righteousness. Isaiah 61:10 rejoices in the fact that God “has clothed me with the garments of salvation; he has covered me with the robe of righteousness.”
The gospel is not a call to clean ourselves up before we come to Jesus. It is an invitation to abandon our self-reliance and instead allow Jesus to clothe us in His perfection! When we rest in Christ’s righteousness alone, we can step into God’s presence with total assurance, knowing we are fully welcomed, perfectly covered, and eternally loved by the King.
May we rejoice and rest in this truth, and may we share this with one more person around us!
Discussion Questions:
- The man without a wedding garment tried to attend the feast on his own terms rather than accepting the host’s provision. Are there areas in your life where you are tempted to rely on your own good deeds rather than resting fully in Christ’s righteousness?
- How does the truth that God provides the “robe” Himself give you confidence when you feel unworthy or weighed down by past mistakes?
- Is there someone in your life who is toiling and working to outrun their past or their current mistakes? Consider sharing the gospel message with them today that, in Christ, we are covered with His righteousness and can rest in His finished work!
