Advent Day 17: Eternal Father (Hebrews 1:3)

Devotion by Andy Comer

“The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact expression of his nature, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.”  (Hebrews 1:3)

I have three beautiful daughters. As they grow up, I’m seeing more and more of my wife in them. The similarities show up not only in their appearance, but in their mannerisms, character, and even their words. The more they mature, the more they look, act, and talk just like their mom.

If you ever wanted to know what God looks like, look no further than Jesus. He is God’s Son—the “radiance of God’s glory and the exact expression of His nature.” Jesus is not somewhat like God or mostly like God—He is exactly and perfectly like God. His life on earth was the full display of God’s glory and goodness.

You were made in the image of God, but that image has been marred by sin. That’s why we look to Jesus. Only by fixing our eyes on Him and following His life can the image of God be restored in us.

Reflect:

– What is one characteristic of God I can clearly see in the life of Jesus?

– What is one characteristic in my life where I can more clearly display the image of Jesus?

– What is one step I can take today to align my life more closely with the example of Jesus?

Pray:

Father, thank you for revealing yourself to us by sending your Son, Jesus. Forgive me when I don’t reflect your character and nature in this world. Give me humility to see areas where I need to be transformed into your image. Give me strength to endure that transformation process. Give me patience to know that You are always at work in my life. Give me grace each and every day. In Jesus name, Amen.
