Devotion by John Herron
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God . . . The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us.” (John 1:1, 14)
This used to confuse me when I was younger because we often refer to the Bible as “The Word”, but in this context, “The Word” is Jesus. The phrase “In the beginning” is deeply significant and intentionally echoes the very first words of the Bible in Genesis 1:1: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”
Likewise, John 1:1 reveals the breathtaking truth of who Jesus is: the eternal Word (forever in the past and forever in the future), fully God, who was not bound by time and space, but stepped into time and space to dwell among us. Before creation (“the beginning”), He existed in perfect unity with the Father. Every star, every breath, every heartbeat owes its existence to Him. This is the Mighty God—limitless in power, yet willing to humble Himself for our salvation.
When the Word became flesh, He didn’t cease to be God. He clothed His majesty in humanity so we could know Him personally. His strength is not only seen in creation but in His willingness to bear the cross for our sins. True might is not domination—it is sacrificial love.
The One who spoke galaxies into being also stooped low to wash feet and embrace the broken. That is power wrapped in grace. In the same manner, we are called to follow His commands and lead others to follow Jesus in a life-changing way.
Today, let this truth anchor your soul: the Mighty God is not distant. He is near, present in your struggles, and strong enough to carry every burden. Whatever you face, His power is unmatched, His presence unshaken. Worship Him for His greatness and draw near to Him for His grace.
Reflect:
– How does knowing that Jesus is both fully God and fully human impact the way you trust Him in daily life?
– In what area of your life do you need to rely on His mighty power rather than your own strength?
Pray:
Lord Jesus, Mighty God, thank You for coming near and making Your dwelling among us. Help me to trust Your power and rest in Your love today. Be my strength in weakness and my peace in chaos. In Your name, Amen.
