Readings: Matthew 25:14–30 | Ruth 3

At first glance, a late-night meeting on a dark threshing floor in Ruth 3 seems a world away from Matthew 25, where a master gives bags of silver to his servants. Yet, both passages beat with the same spiritual heartbeat: the call to take faithful, courageous risks with what we have been given.

In the Parable of the Talents, the master praises the servants who boldly invested his resources, while condemning the one who let fear paralyze him into burying his talent in the dirt. We see this same truth beautifully embodied by Ruth. Guided by Naomi, Ruth takes an immense cultural and personal risk by stepping onto that threshing floor in the middle of the night, humbly asking Boaz to act as her kinsman-redeemer. She didn’t bury her life or her hope in the dirt of her past grief; she laid it all on the line in a bold act of faith.

Like the faithful servants, Ruth invested her loyalty and courage, and God met her risk with overwhelming redemption. Following Jesus means refusing to let fear stop us from walking in faith. God has uniquely entrusted you with time, talents, and resources, and He invites you to step out of your comfort zone, take wise risks, and actively deploy those gifts for the joy and expansion of His Kingdom!

Discussion Questions:

  • The wicked servant in the parable allowed fear and a wrong view of the master to paralyze him into doing nothing. In contrast, Ruth overcame fear to take a massive leap of faith on the threshing floor. What fears or insecurities are currently tempting you to “bury” the gifts, talents, or opportunities God has given you?
  • Boaz immediately recognized Ruth’s worth and faithful character, promising to act as her redeemer without delay. How does knowing that Jesus is our ultimate Redeemer, who enthusiastically celebrates our steps of faith, free you up to take bold steps?
  • What is one specific resource—whether it is your time, a skill, a financial blessing, or a relationship—that God has uniquely entrusted to you right now, and how can you use it to glorify Him this week?
