Welcome to week 33 of Weekly Word!
I hope you’ve continued to be blessed by The Parables of Jesus series! Now that we are in our new sermon series, One More, our Weekly Word readings, devotionals, and reflection questions will help us reflect and prepare our hearts for how God is calling and equipping each of us to reach the “one more!”
This week, we’ll read and learn from the parable of The Hidden Treasure.
Below, you’ll find your readings for this week, a short devotional to enjoy at the end of the week, along with reflection questions for your own time with the Lord or group discussion.
Readings:
- Matthew 13:44–46
- John 9
Devotional:
Readings: Matthew 13:44–46, John 9
The Parable of the Hidden Treasure describes a man who stumbles upon a prize of such infinite value that in his joy, he sells everything he has just to possess it. Discovering Jesus is not a somber obligation or everyday, mundane occurrence—it is the joyful realization that you have found the ultimate treasure!
In John 9, we see this exact dynamic play out in the life of the man born blind. After Jesus opens the man’s eyes and heals him, the religious leaders interrogate the man, trying to trap him in theological debates. Instead of getting tangled in arguments, the man simply shares his undeniable story: “One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.”
When you have truly encountered the priceless treasure of Christ, sharing your faith doesn’t require seminary training, a perfect script, or years of practice—it simply means overflowing with joy and telling others what Jesus has done to transform your heart and your life, and inviting them to experience the same gift!
Discussion Questions:
- The man in the parable sold all he had with joy because he realized the treasure was far more valuable than anything he gave up. How has finding Jesus transformed what you treasure most in life?
- The blind man in John 9 simply said, “I was blind, now I see.” When was the last time you shared your simple testimony of coming to faith with someone else, and who is someone in your life who needs to hear your story?
Dig Deeper
In this sermon from Antioch’s 2023 sermon series, “Parables,” Pastor Andy Comer delves into the parable of the hidden treasure and priceless pearl. In this parable, Jesus teaches us that there is something worth giving up everything we have. If this is true, then we should make every effort to pursue that treasure!
We are praying for you as you dig into God’s Word this week!
